The library is bursting with all sorts of fantastic books, fiction, non-fiction and senior study guides. But can you easily find exactly what you are looking for?
- Do you know the TITLE (name) of the book?
- Do you know the name of the AUTHOR (writer) of the book?
If you do the book will be very easy to find in the library catalogue. All students, teachers and staff have access to the school’s library catalogue ‘Oliver’ anywhere internet access is available. This can be done from any device by logging onto the DEC student portal and choosing the “My School Library” application.
To find a FICTION book in the library you will need to know the SURNAME of the AUTHOR.
All the books in the FICTION section of the library are placed on the shelves in ALPHABETICAL ORDER by the AUTHOR’S SURNAME.
If you are interested in finding The Fault in our stars but didn’t know who wrote it use the library catalogue to find the AUTHOR’S SURNAME and where it is kept in the library.
The SURNAME of AUTHOR of The fault in our stars is GREEN.
The label on the spine of the book is –
GRE (the first 3 letters of the AUTHOR’S SURNAME)
The book will be on the G shelf of the fiction section of the library.
To find a NON FICTION (information) book in the library SEARCH the LIBRARY CATALOGUE by SUBJECT (what the book is about).
The NON FICTION books are ordered by number from 000 – 999.999
It’s not as tricky as it first seems, just match the CALL NUMBER that you find in the catalogue to the spine label on the books on the shelves. This system of numbering the books by subject is called the DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM.
